HEXACHLOROETHANE foundry fluxes Application

Hexachloroethane is known for its distinctive white or slightly off-white crystalline appearance, undergoes sublimation when exposed to heat, emitting an odor reminiscent of camphor. Its solubility characteristics are noteworthy; while it shows minimal solubility in water, it readily dissolves in various organic solvents like trichloroethylene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethyl alcohol, and benzene.

Under specific conditions, hexachloroethane exhibits intriguing reactivity. Subjected to high temperatures, it decomposes into Perchloroethylene and chlorine. Remarkably, it remains inert in the presence of diluted aqueous alkalis or acids but undergoes decomposition in the presence of strong alkalis at elevated temperatures. Notably, it reacts with certain metals, such as calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or zinc, facilitated by a primer like nitrate, a characteristic exploited in the preparation of smoke screens.

In industrial processes involving aluminum and magnesium alloys, hexachloroethane plays a crucial role. Molten alloys often absorb hydrogen, leading to weaknesses in castings due to occluded gas. To address this, the aluminum industry employs hexachloroethane to degas molten metal, either by bubbling chlorine through the melt or by direct introduction. This process liberates chloride through the partial decomposition of hexachloroethane. Beyond industrial applications, hexachloroethane finds utility in smoke candles or grenades, where its vigorous reaction with powdered metals generates screening clouds or smoke. Additional additives are incorporated to initiate and modulate the resulting smoke's characteristics.

Moreover, hexachloroethane serves as an anthelmintic in veterinary medicine and functions as a moth repellent. This compound, with its chemical formula C2Cl6, underscores the intricate balance between scientific advancement, industrial utilization, and environmental stewardship. By embracing safe handling practices and regulatory guidelines, at Advait we can leverage hexachloroethane's versatility while ensuring the well-being of both humans and the environment for future generations.
